Sri Lanka: Construction of an ocular-medical station on Sri Lanka

The ophthalmologist Dr. Miriam Beer from Constance became aware on the bad medical specialised care of the population on a vacation to Sri Lanka in the year 2002 and spontaneously began with the construction of a small medical practice. The location: A small fishing village in the poor south of the country which had remained spared to a great extent from the tourism. In June, 2003 she treated the first patients. At home in Constance she founded the association "Augenlicht für Ceylon e.V." and began to collect donation money, gifts in kind, used glasses and equipment for her medical practice under palm trees. The medical practice could be built up by a donation of the Korff foundation. Dr. Miriam Beer flew 5-6 timesa year to Sri Lanka and at the end of 2004 she could treat up to approx. 200 patients per weeks with 5 employees on-site. The flood disaster on the 26th of December, 2004 destroyed the clinic under palm trees completely. Dr. Miriam Beer was, seriously injured, brought  to the clinic in Colombo. From there she started to organise help to her people and the reconstruction of the clinic. Already with her first return to Sri Lanka Dr. Miriam Beer could distribute 3 tonnes of auxiliary goods - clothes, food and toys for children. Together with honourary assistants she works actively on the reconstruction of the region. With the donation money from Germany 15 new houses could be built in the area of Tangallee and 20 houses could be repaired. On a 40,000 square metre property which the association "Augenlicht für Ceylon e.V." has bought a pattern settlement, as well as an orphanage for 16 children and a mother-child-home with two floors, four rooms per floor are planned, originates. A main building with dining room, office, kitchen and laundry connects both buildings. A fruit and vegetable plantation is also planned; the harvest should cover the personal use and the excess should be sold at the market. The ophthalmic clinic is rebuilt; the medical care of the population is guaranteed. Thanks to numerous gifts in kind the clinic is well equipped with optical devices and glasses.
